Challenges

In recent years, food security in Ghana is threatened due to the high cost of imported fertilizer. In 2021, the increase in freight-on-board (FoB) caused about 200% increase in fertilizer prices in the country. Moreover, about 30% of fertilizer imported into Ghana come from Ukraine and Russia, thus, the Russia war in Ukraine destabilized fertilizer supply. Smallholder farmers who produce the bulk of our staple foods are affected the most; these challenges have increased their cost of farming and reduced their yields and revenue.

Solutions

AgriCentric Ventures has embarked on a community-based Fertilizer Program that leverages stakeholder partnerships to provide tailored solutions to fertilizer-related challenges for smallholder farmers in rural farming communities. AgriCentric Ventures partners with key stakeholders (government, international development organizations, community leaders, and farm-based associations, etc) to set up mini biofertilizer production facilities in rural farming communities. These facilities collect agricultural waste generated within the communities and process them into quality crop-specific biofertilizer for smallholder farmers within the communities. We also train smallholder farmers in the rural communities on the effective application of biofertilizer in crop production.
