Challenges
An unstable food system affects the environment, causing problems like air and water pollution and disrupting food supplies. In the Philippines, an additional problem is the increasing amount of food and solid waste, especially in households. While technology exists in the Philippines to solve this issue – and it was originally received with enthusiasm – there are several challenges facing wide-scale adoption. Complex composting is a lengthy process, which includes a long maturation period, and, when coupled with a lack of a stable market, hinders the technology’s ability to scale as well as become sustainable. Moreover, meeting the diverse needs of end-users, including women, youth, and the elderly, while maintaining their motivation is difficult.
Solutions
To address these challenges, FCCT has simplified the composting process with improved technology and better farmer training, making it easier and more efficient. They are also working with partners and using grants to create strong market connections for the compost. By improving compost labeling, packaging, and upgrading facilities, FCCT ensures high product quality. These improvements aim to revitalize FCCT’s composting project, supporting farmers and promoting sustainable farming practices in the region.
