Challenges

Farmers in the Volta Region in Ghana are noted for producing pepper, tomatoes, onions, okra, aubergine, sugarcane and rice and other crops. However, they face problems with respect to yields and access to agricultural inputs with female farmers being disproportionately affected. Fertilizer shortages and high prices deprive rural farms of sufficient amounts in the soil for optimal crop production, leading to reduced yields and lower incomes for farmers. This not only affects the livelihoods of rural communities but also hinders overall agricultural productivity and food security.

Additionally, there are negative environmental consequences and health hazards resulting from practices including burning masses of agricultural waste in fields which could be beneficial if utilized through regenerative farming practices.

Solutions

Sabon Sake focuses on soils and landscapes ensuring that they are restored, healthy and are active carbon sinks, then equips local and regional farmers and systems with climate resilient tools, resources, and practical knowledge..

The company upcycles biomass waste which will otherwise be abandoned or openly burnt contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. The waste is turned into Biochar and biochar-based fertilizers that help improve soil structure, nutrient availability and biodiversity while building drought resilience by increasing water holding capacity. The soil blends also help store permanent, stable carbon into the ground, mitigating climate change. Sabon Sake also trains farmers on agronomic farming practices such as Regenerative, carbon farming practices and Sustainable Soil Management, that help improve their income.
