Trialing, researching, and adapting climate-smart farming practices for innovative farming model
Innovation Type:
Water-Food
Product Segment:
Water – Capture/Storage
Country of Incorporation:
Uganda
Challenges
The negative impacts of climate change in Uganda fall disproportionally on smallholder farmers who are particularly vulnerable to extreme climate events, such as flooding, landslides and droughts. In the context of rain-fed agriculture retaining a higher ratio of water in the soil is crucial to mitigate the risk of droughts and to improve yields, leading to healthier soils, watersheds and food. Hence, the adoption of smart agricultural practice is an integral part for increasing agricultural productivity as it enhances adaptation to climate change.
Solutions
Asili Agriculture is an integrated food security platform for East Africa. Established in 2012 in Western Uganda, it has pioneered and disseminated climate-smart agriculture practices that improve yields and soil health across 6 districts in Uganda, while aggregating grains for local and regional markets. Asili Climate-Smart Farming Solutions is a WE4F technical assistance innovation that aims to identify and quantify monetary incentives to improve climate-smart farming practices and encourage the adoption by smallholder farmers in Asili’s network. The innovation measures soil organic carbon improvements leading to higher water retention and better yields, to aggregate, register, and monetize carbon credits at scale.
