Challenges
Due to the high cost of traditional heating solutions, most farmers resort to cutting down trees in order to incubate newly born piglets. In addition to this, there is significant water wastage when running piggery operations.
Solutions
Our innovation recognizes the interdependency and interconnectedness of water, energy, and food systems and the complex relationship between these three essential resources. Our innovation is creation of a model, integrated, closed loop farm centered on biogas system whereby the waste generated in the piggery division is harnessed in the biodigester system for energy generation. Energy is needed for water extraction, treatment, and distribution, as well as for agricultural mechanization, irrigation systems, and food processing. Food production requires water for irrigation and energy for machinery operation, transportation, and storage. This innovation optimizes resource use, minimize waste, promote efficiency, and consider the social, economic, and environmental implications of our choices. The innovation sits squarely in the water-energy-food nexus concept demonstrating the interconnected relationship between water, energy, and food resources.
