Challenge

In Morocco, 91% of the total rural population (14.6 million people living in 32,000 rural villages) do not have access to safe sanitation services. The absence of adequate sanitation service has a serious impact on health and social development, especially for children and women. Additionally, the disposal of domestic wastewater without any treatment contaminates the potable water and pollutes the environment. Contamination of already dwindling water resources will continue unabated unless appropriate and affordable alternatives are made available.

Alternative water resources need to be found, agriculture being the largest consumer with 70-80% of water consumption. So, the mobilization of unconventional resources to reuse wastewater for irrigation in agriculture is key to secure food production.

There are already various techniques, practices and technologies to address these issues, but they are often costly and highly energy-consuming.

Solution

GREEN WATECH is looking to change the current water sanitation situation by treating and turning wastewater into irrigation water through a new innovative, low-cost, and efficient technology called “Soil Based Filter (SBF)” or “Fitre à Sol”.

GREEN WATECH works on reducing the degradation of water quality due to discharges and lack in sanitation service, through the implementation of the low-cost & efficient solution for wastewater treatment. The innovator also works on minimizing the use of potable water by reusing high quality of treated water in irrigation.

Besides the water treatment and reuse in irrigation, GREEN WATECH technology does not require any energy for operation and works only with gravity.
